CCU Alumna Gives West Virginia Something to "Rock" About

CCU alumna, Jenny (Cerny) Boulware has recently been spending her time studying rock formations, structures and peaks at North Bend Sate Park in hopes to better understand the history of the state of West Virginia. Boulware, who is a lecturer with the West Virginia University Department of History, will even be focusing a graduate course class on rock formation and land use patterns. In the meantime, she will be investigating rock structures from a theoretical perspective, focusing on the legal aspect of cultural resource protection. This project also includes her meeting with archeologists and park personnel within the state park as well as doing a comparative study with another park, Stonewall Jackson Park. Jenny graduated from CCU in 1998 with a degree in History and later graduated from University of South Carolina in 2000 with her master’s degree. Good luck to Jenny on her research!

New Alumni Board Members Elected

The ballots are in and the results have been tallied for the six open positions on the CCU Alumni Board of Directors. The six elected candidates are…former board members Tamera Ballard ’02, G. Derek Blanton ’79, Patrick Herrmann ’97, Porter Medley ’99 and new members Travis Dannelly ’06 and Kayla Johnson ’06! Congratulations!These newly elected members will serve a three year term on the board beginning in January 2013. Thank you to everyone who ran for a position to those alumni who voted!

CCU Alumna wins Congressional Award Medal

The Congressional Award Medal is a prestigious award that was established by the U.S. Congress in 1979 and is given to Americans aged 14 to 23 to recognize initiative, service and achievement in young people. It focuses on four areas: voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness, and expedition or exploration. Then, based on time commitments in each of those areas, either a bronze, silver or gold Congressional certificate or medal is awarded. Well CCU’s very own Alexandra Tamburro, was recently presented with a Bronze Congressional Award Medal this past August for her service with AmeriCorps NCCC. She graduated from CCU in 2010 with a degree in Political Science. Since graduating, the time that she has spent helping others is truly humbling. She has worked closely with non-profits, local municipalities, state governments, federal government and schools completing various service projects all over. She worked with AmeriCorps Disaster Relief in Joplin, Mo., City Impact Restoration Church in Madison, Ala., Wildlands Restoration Volunteers in Boulder, Colo., Piton Foundation’s Tax Help Colorado in Denver, Colo. and Project Homecoming in New Orleans, La. Alexandra is now currently living in Central New York and has accepted a position working for the Department of Labor. It is an honor to be able to call her a fellow Chant. We can’t wait to see what she does next!

Alumna Amber Campbell is off to the Olympics again!

Amber Campbell, a former CCU track & field star and a 2004 graduate, will head off to London on the U.S Olympic team for the second time. Campbell earned her place on the team at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. this month after she set a meet record in the women's hammer throw. Campbells' record-breaking mark that placed her first in the day's competition and earned her a spot on the Olympic Team was 71.80 meters. This will be Campbell's second Olympics appearance as she had previously finished 21st in the preliminaries at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. We look forward to cheering Amber on this summer as the games kick-off on July 27, 2012. Go Chants!

A CCU alumna on a mission for God

Last Thursday, Laura Stanley Ashley ’06, left her home in Mount Pleasant, her job and her husband Matthew Ashley ’06, for a trip that just may be a life changing experience. She boarded a plane and off she went to Brazil on her first global mission trip experience! Laura has been given this wonderful opportunity through her church, Seacoast, who teams up with Project Amazon to make this mission possible. Laura, along with 11 other members from her church, began their journey when they arrived in the city of Santarem on Saturday. They then made their way inland by boat to the river village of “Estrada D” where they will spend the next two weeks. CCU Alumnus James Brown rides for a cause

CCU alumnus James Brown ’83, a coach at Waccamaw High School, wanted to do something special to honor his former student and raise money and awareness for her foundation. James had coached Ashley Gaines from 2004 to 2006 and had admired her courage as she battled lymphoma. Brown and his wife Sonja (Taylor) ’91 planned a 20-day bicycle ride beginning in Dallas, Texas, and ending in Surfside Beach. From June 8 to June 30, he did the riding while Sonja drove along making plans and blogging the experience from beginning to end (http://theashleygride.com/index.html). As a result the couple raised more than $14,000 by the end of the 1,245 mile ride through six states. The Ashley G. Foundation, established in 2008 after Gaines’ death at age 18, works to educate the public about children and teens with lymphoma in addition to raising money for research and assisting their parents financially. Alumnus Will Turner joins the Coastal Carolina University Board of Trustees

As of July 1, 2011, Will Turner ’97 and Carlos Johnson became the two newest members of Coastal Carolina University’s Board of Trustees. The board is comprised of 17 members; 15 are elected by the General Assembly (two from each Congressional District and three from the state at large), and two are appointed by the Governor. Johnson is a gubernatorial designee, and Turner represents District 4.

Turner earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from CCU and is a business development manager for US Foodservice in Greenville. Born in Spartanburg and raised in Conway, he previously worked at his family's business, Goldfinch Funeral Home, and as a marketing/business development director in the credit union industry. He has also been a professional firefighter.

Will joins six other board members who are also alumni of the University: Chairman William H. Alford ’77 of Myrtle Beach, Vice Chairman Samuel J. Swad ’86 of Gaffney, Natasha M. Hanna ’94 of Conway and D. Wyatt Henderson ’98 of Greer.

Soccer Reunion

This past spring, more than 80 former Coastal Carolina University soccer players from both the men’s and women’s teams reunited for a fun-filled weekend. Activities included a mixer at Broadway at the Beach, an on-campus match between the alumni and current Chanticleer players, and a delicious banquet hosted by CCU Athletics and the Office of Alumni Relations. The group paid tribute to the late April Stirton during the soccer games, where her #26 jersey was retired. April was a former student athlete who was killed in a motorcycle accident last April. Reunions like these provide great opportunities to share fond memories, reconnect with old friends, and revisit favorite hangouts from your college days.
